The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine in the Cooper is an absolute gem, pulling strongly across the rev range. However, even the 1.2 turbo petrol in the entry-level One offers surprisingly nippy acceleration. The Cooper S delivers proper hot hatch pace, thanks to its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, while the diesel Cooper D is responsive and punchy from low revs. The three-cylinder petrol engines in the One and Cooper models are remarkably refined; a muted off-beat thrum is all you hear unless you put your foot down hard, and you feel barely any vibration through the steering wheel or pedals. The Cooper S sounds suitably sporty, thanks in part to a system that directs engine noise into the cabin. There's far too much road noise on the motorway, however, plus plenty of wind noise from around the upright windscreen. Proportionally the MINI five-door looks just like the three-door. From the front and rear you probably won’t even notice the difference, but in profile you can see what MINI has done to improve space. It has enough cabin room for family use and it has a more sizeable boot, with practical touches like an adjustable boot floor.

Aside from that the MINI five-door is very much like its three-door sibling. That means excellent build quality, plenty of customisation options, up-to-date technology and great handling. The fun, sporty characteristics of the three-door MINI are retained so you get nimble and grippy handling, nicely weighted steering plus a snappy gear change.
