Volvo is rediscovering its traditional estate roots with the newly unveiled V90. Following on from the S90 saloon, the big V90 will rival the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate.

Building on Volvo Cars’ indisputable heritage in the estate segment, which began more than 60 years ago with the Volvo Duet, the new V90 takes the premium estate a clear step forward in terms of aesthetics, materials and finish, while living up to the ultimately practical nature of any true estate. The new V90 is the third car unveiled in Volvo’s top-of-the-line 90 series, all of which are built on the company’s specially designed and fully modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which has opened up a range of new opportunities in terms of how Volvos can be designed, built and equipped.

The new V90 delivers cutting-edge Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology, the most advanced standard safety package on the market, including Large Animal Detection and Run-off Road Mitigation, and class-leading connectivity, including smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay Looks can be deceiving though. While the V90 looks big, its maximum boot space of 1526 litres is actually less than the competition from BMW and Audi. In fact it's even less than the V70 it effectively replaces. The rear seats do fold flat though plus there's an underfloor storage area. The lack of outright space might disappoint fans of traditional big Volvo estate cars, but they're sure to be impressed by the good looks of the V90 both inside and out. The interior is a particular highlight with Volvo's trademark minimalist design. The V90 will get the same engines as the S90 with the entry-level being the impressive D4 with 190PS and official economy of 62.8mpg. The D5 has 225PS yet still returns a claimed 57.6mpg. Both come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

At the top of the range will be the powerful T8 plug-in hybrid. This develops 407PS and has a 25 mile electric-only range. It's quick with a 0-62mph time of just 5.2 seconds and yet thanks to the fact it's a plug-in can quote official figures of 135mpg and 47g/km CO2.
